Shortly after graduating from college in 2013, I joined a community of creatives looking for an outlet to express ourselves. Together, we launched Rust Magazine to serve as a fresh voice within our city, ideating everything—the name, design, mission, identity, etc.— from the ground up. We paid the printing costs of the first issue ourselves, then hosted a successful Kickstarter campaign and fundraising event to begin work on issue two, partnering with local businesses to secure advertising revenue. I continued to write for Rust for several years before moving out of state, and the magazine is still in operation to this day. Copies are available online and in select local shops throughout Milwaukee.
